Frederic Albert Mann

Fred passed away peacefully of kidney failure on September 3, 2021, (at 89) surrounded and comforted by his loving family. He was a native of Phoenix, Arizona and the son of the late Frederic Bertram Mann and the late Margaret Elizabeth Krug. He graduated from North Phoenix High and received a Congressional Appointment to the United States Naval Academy. Upon graduation with the class of 1953, Fred received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US. Air Force. He attended flight schools in Arizona and Texas and then served with fighter squadrons in California and Germany, flying F-86 and F-100A and C. Fred was proud to have served in the World’s First Supersonic Squadron. He resigned his commission in 1957 and served in the Air Force Reserves until 1966. Meanwhile, he was recruited by Texas Instruments and moved to Dallas, Texas. Fred started in production of semi-conductors and worked many years writing and editing technical manuals. A significant responsibility of his work was representing Texas Instruments on international electronics standards committees. Fred got to travel all over the world in order to attend committee meetings.

Fred found his thrill in life in his forties when he learned to snow ski. This was so impactful that when Fred took early retirement from TI, he and his wife moved to Salida, Colorado. He logged over 300 lifetime days of skiing before moving back to Dallas at the age of 79 to be near family. They enjoyed the active senior lifestyle at Frisco Lakes, a Del Webb Community and then, recently, a more reserved pace at Highland Springs in Dallas. He loved playing games (chess, other board games, cards, dominoes, miniature golf, and croquet) and would show no mercy regardless of the age of the opponent. Fred especially enjoyed teaching games to his children, grandchildren or other young relatives, explaining probabilities, strategies, and being a stickler for the written rules of the game.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years: the former Wanda Marlene Mehring, of Taneytown, Maryland; daughters, Nancy (and her husband Ray Kimbrell) and Lisa (and her husband Daniel Morrison) and six grandchildren (Patrick, Katie, and Nikki Kimbrell, and Emily, Ben, and Olivia Morrison.) Fred is predeceased by daughter Laura.
